Helene before you do any adjusting yourself, get the thing running correctly
with Dell support help. You don't want to be making any changes that they
can blame for your problems and it's their responsibility to provide you
with a correctly functioning computer. I can't believe Dell is shipping
machines without that particular security patch installed.

The only thing I would do is immediately go to windows update and load all
the critical update patches. Depending on what version of WinXP Dell
installed, there may be a lot of them. Don't worry about the recommended
updates just do the critical for now. Then make sure your are running
correctly before you add any personal software. If you are getting out of
memory messages, you shouldn't and that should be Dell's problem. I have
never had an out of memory message of WinXP. You don't normally get them.

I would leave Mcafee running for a little while until you get things sorted
out and then you can uninstall it and put Norton on. Make sure you get the
latest virus definitions from Mcafee.
