Dear Clint and Babs, Clint, I did not try to format Drive C: while in Windows. The only way to format the drive (as far as I know) is by using the Recovery Console. It is installed separately and then invoked as a startup option before Windows loads up. I would have been very happy to use it, but (as I wrote previously) it demands a password - and I don't have a password.
Babs, yes, I have a disk labeled "Product Recovery CD." However, I assume that it is the same as a regular OEM disk. After all, it does include the Recovery Console. Babs suggested that I try Win 98 format. Will that format program wipe out NTFS and give me FAT? If so, can I convert from FAT to NTFS without causing new problems. Is the Win 98 format my best option at this stage? If that option is not recommended, should I re-load XP over my existing mess (talk of system overload!) without Windows updates, and hope that all will be well?
