I've always used the win98 boot floppy when a system does not have a boot from cd option in the BIOS, though the winME floppy should do fine too. Don't use the XP or win2k floppies unless you can enjoy REALLY LONG INSTALLATION TIMES, not as long as NT4 off of the floppy but close :<

As to what MS gets off your computer and how much varies from person to person. The extremely paranoid will side on the too much slant with anything and everything being grabbed, while the more optimistic may side with little more than licenses of MS products contained in the registry.

I tend to go with the more optimistic view myself, though bear in mind the reputation of M$ in the courts and their respective business model of monopolizing everything.

What if he formatted from a floppy with Win98's format program? Can he format that way to start from scratch and then use his WinXP
CD to format and install? I don't know if you can do that with WinXP and an NTFS drive, just asking... Dave, do you have a WinXP
CD or one of those OEM CD's that is supposed to bring your system back to the way it was when you first bought it?

Ooooweee, I'm in trouble because I have every update they've recommended (other than that one that I had to reinstall when my system
slowed to a crawl - and I didn't even have Norton!)...

What kind of info does MS get off your computer?
