I would be very surprised to see the "S" offered as a replacement. I could see that they might stop producing more *istD cameras at some point, sell out stock, and then introduce a higher-res top of the line model. But to position the *istD-S as a replacement right from the get-go would not make much sense. They would never be able to sell out existing stock of the *istD. But I expect they'll continue to sell both models for the foreseeable future and introduce a higher res version in about a year.

Oh so typically Pentax. Compare to Canon that is using the same card type (CF) in all their cameras, from the diminutive Digital Elphs to the 1D. If Canon can cram a CF in the Elph whay exactly stops Pentax doing so in a SLR sized camera ?
OTOH Pentax is using SD cards in the Optio line, so maybe they want to standardize on that. But then the Baby should be a dual format (CF and SD) to allow for the transition for people that bought the ist D and the possibility to use your Optio's card in the baby in some emergency cases.
If you think this is a moot point, just look at the memory stick challenged Sony. They made sure that the F828 and V3 can take both CF and stick. On the high end digicams the XD challenged Olympus is doing the same.
So maybe it's actually important.

On the other hand, after the istDs (baby istD) comes out, the istD may become totally unavailable. The problem with that is, according to someone who has actually handled a prototype, the istDs will only use SD cards, so memory cards will not be interchangeable between the two cameras, not a good thing for someone who has already invested a bunch in CF cards.
