Yes, you can initiate mid roll rewind, but it does rewind the film entirely into the canister. The camera has a mind of it's own but it's a very simple mind.

Wait until you shoot your 24 shots (or 36 shots, etc.), and the body
decides that you now want to rewind the film back into the cannister - it
doesn't ask if it's OK, it doesn't ask if it'll be not too loud for the
situation, but it'll just go whirr-rrr-rrring away until it's done.
