I grabbed a SMC-F 35-80 f4-5.6 as a basic zoom for my K100D. What I do to elminate the issues with the variable aperture is soom to the widest angle then set the lens to f5.6 (max aperture zoomed in) or less. That way it doesn't change aperture when using it. I shoot it in Av or M only.
Nice little lens at f8 or f11 btw.
