Like, say, Apple? Or are all those OS upgrades (10.1/2/3/4/5/6) free?
I suppose the major Windows upgrades (95, 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP, Vista,
and 7) have all been free, eh?
So far, I've used 98, which was an OEM on a computer I bought, and then XP,
also an OEM on a computer.
That's two operating systems in over 10 years with no drama, and from what I
can tell, very little cost to me, as OEM comes at a very discounted price
when you buy hardware.
On both my boxes that came with the OS installed, I got an OEM CD, with no
charge showing on the invoice.
I migrated 98 through 2 machines and have now migrated XP through 3
computers.
Every now and again my computer goes back to the evil empire and downloads
an update, which also costs nothing, other than bandwidth, of which I have
plenty to spare.
I have never had a problem with a driver not being available, and other than
a harware issue this summer, which I suspect was caused by my insistence on
having my OS on a RAID 0, I've only had one problem with hardware, that
being a meltdown on a cheap junk PC system that I inherited from a friend
when she moved overseas.
I'm not anticipating any issues when I migrate to Win7, and as I'll be
upgrading my ram at the same time, I'm anticipating that I'll either get the
OS for free, or else at a very nominal cost.
PCs are pretty inexpensive to own, and contrary to what the special people
like to bray, they actually work pretty well.
