I hope you're right. But I should point out that Epson does have an

Perhaps
they did a better job with Windows 7.
After all this fuss...
I went to the epson page and downloaded driver version 6.57 released
in June 2009.

I installed it on the MacBook system that I have booting off my Snow
Leopard test system. I also installed all the Epson premium profiles
for Fine Art, Matte, Glossy and Canvas paper sets, optimized for the
Epson R2400.
I then started up Lightroom v2.5, imported three finished-work files
off my data CD, and went to the Print module. Selecting "Page
Setup..." netted the usual Epson R2400 print queue, selected US Letter
paper, vertical orientation, manual rear feed. Then clicked the Print
Settings button. The initial view of the Print Dialog was collapsed,
so I clicked the disclosure button to the right of the Printer: name.
There were all the printing controls, virtually identical to what they
were on Leopard. I configured it for Velvet Fine Art, Best Quality
printing with no Color Management. In LR's Print Job panel, I added
the Velvet Fine Art profiles, then selected the optimized "best
quality" one. Loaded the printer and clicked "Print One". A perfect
print.
I did the same usual printing with Pixelmator (I don't have Photoshop
installed on the test system yet). It printed exactly as it always
does.
So: The Epson driver released for the R2400 v6.57 works just fine in
Snow Leopard.
Much ado about nothing at all.

No. not much ado about nothing. This driver doesn't work with PSCS4
and 10.6. You can find citations all over the web regarding this
problem, and both Apple and Epson confirmed it. It's nice that it
works with Lightroom, but that doesn't help me.
In any case, Time Machine restored my system 10.5.8 with nary a
hiccup, and I'm printing a job. I'll experiment again with my laptop,
which is still running 10.6.1, but I don't expect to go to 10.6 any
time soon on my work machine.
