From: Bob Sullivan
John, Have you looked at the old FA28-105/4-5.6, the old power zoom one introduced with the PZ-1? It's as good as the FA28-80/3.5-4.7 power zoom is bad. (I almost gave up shooting with the PZ-1 when I had that lens.) Regards, Bob S.
I have, sort of ... I check KEH frequently, and I'm always looking whenever I go into my local independent camera dealers. Whenever I go anywhere, if I spot an independent dealer, I drop in to see if they might have anything in the way of Pentax goodies.
This is all based on my experience in school & a few weddings I'm already beginning to shoot.
I cover the range with a 28-70 & an 80-200 - both constant aperture at f/2.8. I shoot the 80-200 on the tripod so I can stop down 2 stops to f/5.6 and still manage without having to push the ISO too high.
I just wish I had a little bit more on the wide end with 24 instead of 28, and I think I could hand hold 105 at the long end.
Plus it wouldn't require me to change lenses to get into the medium-short telephoto range. Means I don't have to worry about missing something while making the change over.
Currently what I'm having to do is mount the K10D on the 80-200 on the tripod. I give up some mega-pixels & some ISO range because the K10D doesn't perform as well as the K20D. I know neither performs as well as a K-7 or a K-5, but I don't have the budget to buy either one of those before I finish school.
I've got my own "road-map" for capital expenses, and the K-3 should be on the market by the time I'm budgeted to replace the K20D (and demote it, so I can retire the K10D).
My "dream" 24-105 is there on the road-map, but some version of the 28-105 may be my compromise with reality. I've been comparing all three versions on Bojidar Dimitrov's Pentax K-Mount Page.
That's a compromise I may have to make, but my "dream" is still that extra little bit at the wide end & the constant aperture - f/4 would be ok; f/2.8 really would be a dream come true.
