Yesterday I went running as usual with my regular Saturday morning
running group. After the run we go to Starbucks for coffee and banter
and a few other friends usually show up. Recently a cyclist friend
turned up and happened to mention that he'd just bought a new camera.
He isn't a serious photographer by any means and I think even to call
him an "enthusiast" would be an exaggeration. His new camera is a
Nikon D800. The guys at the photo store told him it not only has more
pixels than the competition, it has a bigger, full-frame, sensor, so
it can provide those extra pixels without loss of image quality.
Anyway, he loves it. He really likes being able to crop small parts of
an image and still have plenty of resolution. I don't think he'll ever
print anywhere near large enough to need it (I didn't tell him so),
but it's there.

Market forces are not rational. They're not logical. But they are
real. And the majority of the people who drive them know far less
about photography and cameras than most members of the PDML.
