That statement about defeating Al Qaeda just struck me as completely
ludicrous. Maybe there are 100 or so Al Qaeda in Afghanistan. It is the Taliban
and other insurgents they are fighting not Al Qaeda. Although the Taliban
protected Bin Laden and no doubt tolerated the training camps they certainly
never did and never have threatened attacks on the U.S. as far as I know.

Subject: [Pen-l] McChrystal in Rolling Stone

The implication being that winning the war would be a good thing, now
that it's Obama's war?

CB: That would be your inference , not an implication (smile)

It's still "Bush's war.
He started it and it's been going on for 8 of ten years under him.
That's u all's snarky formulation , not mine. Of course, u like to not
mention that Obama gave a timetable for ending it. In fact, my
implication or explicit statement is that McChrystal and the rightwing
are trying to join u in your formulation , by trying to make it
"Obama's war",not theirs.

It's not winnable as far as I can tell. The Taliban can be knocked out
of the cities, but not out of the "country" side. They live too
integrally with the land. McCrystal probably knows that better than
anybody. That's why he wants to get out of it.

Obama's statement was that Al Q must be defeated. I seem to recall u
having a somewhat similar notion after NYC, where u live, was
attacked on 9/11.

Will Obama use this opportunity to end McCrystal's strategy since
McCrystal is gone ?
