I had run the gamut of all kinds of doctors for about
5 years now. This all started in about 1999 with a
heck of a gut ache. Then I started getting lite
headed and almost passing out. So into the doc I
went. Found blood in the stool so the doc did a
endoscopy and a colonoscopy and found a stricture in
my upper colon and diverticulitis. He whacked out a
foot of it and resected it.

I was better for about a year. Then I started having
this chronic fatigue, high BP, high cholesterol,
massive wieght gain and zipola testosterone. So they
did an MRI and found the microadenoma. Said no big
deal and gave me testosterone gel, BP meds,
cholesterol meds. I got worse. Then the flushing
started, a brown discoloration around my lower neck,
got anemic, was really feeling bad and had 10 to 20
bwel mmovements a day. So they said it was
depression, then it was IBS. Then the hypoglycemic
thing started. Then they told me that they had tested
everything possible and I was just crazy.

So I started typing "facial flushing, diareaha, chronic
fatigue into google. Read I don't know how many
pubmed articles. The carcinoid thing seemed to fit.
So I looked up the docs on carciniod.org and found one
at OHSU in Portland. I called him up and explained
what was going on. He said come on in and he would
rule it in or rule it out. So he did some blood tests
that are only done at Ohio State U. They came back
positive for the two general neuroendocrine tumor
markers pancreastatin and pancreatic polypeptide. I
was double on the pancreastatin and triple on the
pancreatic polypeptide. He said he was not sure this
was carcinoid but the symptoms fit and the blood work
sort of supported it.

So we tried the sandostatin. The first week I lost 20
lbs. Felt like eating and felt 20 years younger (i'm
48). This worked great. About 6 months later I
started having symptoms again so he upped the
frequency of the shot. And gave me sub cutaneous
sandostatin to take for break through symptoms. that
worked for awhile. Now it doesnt work so well. he
told me the reason was that STRESS is one of the
things that iritates the tumor and causes it to
secrete the pancreastatin and the polypeptide and that
causes the symptoms. So now I am pursuing altering my
work somewhat to stay away from stress. Tough to do I
run the 10th largest sawmill in the world. 223
families depend on paychecks. Its a tough business
but i love it. So i try to get lots of rest and try
to not get stressed. I will probably go off on
disability next year (company provides a great long
term disability) so I am training a replacement now.

Yeah this sucks a lot. But the doc doesnt seem to be
able to do anything else till a tumor actually shows
up on a scan. If it doesnt, then he calls it an
unbalanced endocrine problem. So the endo is looking
to dig deeper and see what he can figure out. It
takes FOREVER. and of course my type A personality
doesnt deal well with THAT. hahahaha.

You can correspond with me any time my email is

we can help figure this out together. I just like
talking to someone about it!

Thanks!!
