Problem solved. Apologies for raising it without doing enough research
(I'd done quite a bit, but obviously not enough....).
I found the solution on another thread.
Add "sub bufferThreshold { 100 }" to wavin.pm (which is in C:\Documents
and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\Squeezebox\Cache\InstalledPlugins\Plugins\WaveInput )
The response is now almost instant. I was a bit bemused by other
threads suggesting changing radio station buffering since I'm not
getting SB to play a radio station (the sound is coming from a
streaming website).
I am still rather puzzled since when I first used wavin about 3 months
ago I didn't have to do this. Since then I have since rebuilt all the
software on the PC (yes, I know, Windows is not as good as other OSs)
and this was the first time I had tried wavin again.
If anyone knows why this works I'd be interested in the reason.
