The api gives you three choices for selecting bit width, 8bit, 16bit, or
Default. So theoretically, Sony could have hacked the default to be
24bit. Then if an app just uses the default and only asks the system to
play music files, it would work with 24bit files too. But this only a
possible scenario and probably unlikely since hacking the default may
cause trouble for some apps.

So yes apps other than sony's are likely limited by the android limits.
Though if Sony implemented the high resolution audio features as an
external standard USB Audio device within the same housing, then there
are some other apps that can use it.
