Much like the nightmares about his father's death, which still haunted him,
he had them about Julia as well. "I've met an angel once," he told her
absently, "face to face." He thought about the young woman who had died so
young and ended up at the Legacy asking for help.

NM:

Julia knew which one he was referring to, had even seen her afterwards, but
there was something about Derek's expression, especially in his eyes, that
had her reaching over to touch his hand when he would have put the UV into
gear.

"Derek," she spoke quietly, waiting until he met her gaze before continuing
"It wasn't your fault. You couldn't have known. And.. and I'm here now."

She wasn't sure if that made a difference, but Julia didn't want to see the
haunted look in his eyes anymore. As if everything that had happened since
then and until now was all his doing or responsibility in fault.

She tried for a smile, a quiet one that urged him to return it and poignant
as to what was, what could have been and what ended up being. Strange is
the path of the Legacy member but one that each one of them accepted when
they joined the secret society-including sacrifices if it should be asked of
them.

"Oh I will," she assured Reese, "and if he is involved I'll know just how
serious it is before we leave this island. It won't be a total loss, no
matter what happens. I've wanted to see what was over here for as long as I
can remember. I used to beg my mother to bring me over here, but she said
we were allowed. I always thought it was kind of mean to make a whole
island private, now I'd give my eye teeth to have one of my own."

"Well," Reese joked, pulling out ahead of Derek's UV and following Milo's
vehicle "get them ready because here we go."
