I'm not explaining myself well enough. I agree. What I'm wanting to 
do is supply an escape character, but only when within the ESC() 
delimiter.

Agree, I'm proposing that it is always OFF, I just turned it on for
convience in my sample scripts. My turning it on in especially 
message 18527 was definitely confusing.
