Ted:  In view of all the time you've taken to explain your concept, 
I'll implement an Esc function which I now understand you to mean to 
be a function to apply an escape character.  Its easier for me to do 
two-argument functions, so it will be
esc(string-to-escape, escape char to use).

But I don't plan to change the standard configuration.
