Yo Brian I had the very same problem when I installed an internal Radeon CD-R in place of the stock DVD reader from Apple. I was able to fix it by upgrading to System 9.2 from 9.0.4 (via 9.1). Apparently the ROM was too old to recognize the Radeon Drive, because I saw that drive listed in the Authoring Support folder from 9.2. I was having weird buggy things happening, like the cursor leaving tracks all over the screen, so I reinstalled 9.1 OVER 9.2, saving the Authoring Support folder to transfer, and have had no problems since. You COULD try booting from a different System (even an older one) just to see if the bug lies within System 9.1.
