No, I'm sure I've used an 8x with 9.1.

Tried booting without a CD in the slot ?

I've seen similar problems when the CD doesn't insert properly and is making
bad contact, or the interface board on the back of the CD isn't firmly
mounted.  The CD should insert with a good solid click.
