Somewhere in the part that got trimmed, I think I mentioned I had just got a CD drive for this laptop; I've always had the problem :) since I bought an internal CD-ROM drive. One drive I got was as-is, but this one I *know* works. It certainly could be the interface is dead, since it's separate from the floppy interface I've never tested it until now (I bought the 1400, also, used).
