David I will try to replicate your test but in the meantime I had a similar problem with a 'blob' about 3mm across relative to the size of the chip. I noticed this having shot an area of sky with the ISO set to 1250 during testing. The 'blob' was darker and noisier than the surrounding area. Careful tests also showed it to be present at lower ISO settings but not as noticeable. Since the chip was rather dirty I cleaned it with a sensor swab moistened in ethanol and the 'blob' disappeared. Just a thought.
