I'm totally baffled here. My Windows machines have no such

Are you sure those are Mac formatted disks? I have no trouble with Windows reading mounted Mac shared volumes over a network connection but try to plug one in via Firewire and I get nothing unless the disk is formatted in a Windows friendly format. I run XP workstations and OS-X and System 9 Macs. They live and play happily together but exchanging Mac formatted disks between them without the aid of some other software is something I've never been able to do... and never really missed either. Networking solves any sharing problems without exchanging disks. Just for curiosity I just tried it again... connecting a Mac formated firewire disk onto a Windows XP Pro system... no success.
