Depth of field and sharpness are not the same thing, obvious I know but, while f32 may give you more depth it will also give you less sharpness. Most lenses have an optimum sharpness, each lens is different but it's generally in the range of f5.6 to f11 certainly not much beyond that.

Yes of course as regards your first point. I agree that there is always an optimum aperture range for a particular lens, however I am sure you would agree with me, that there is no point in having a sharp but partially out of focus image, especially when the client wants the whole thing having the appearance of being in focus from front to back!

Loosing a small degree of sharpness when moving to less than optimum apertures is the price one has to accept, just as applying swings losses a degree of sharpness also. It is not a big problem and is easily dealt with by careful use of USM....not the case if the image is steadily going out of focus! Like most things in life photography is a balance of choices, there is no perfect answer, just a subjective decision making process based on experience!
