My experience has shown that an external firewire burner has been a good buy. You do at least have a choice of media and the unit will probably be much faster than the one in your Mac.
My G4 tower only burns at 1x so the advantage of the LaCie teamed with toast titanium thats comes bundled and burns at 4x can't be overestimated. It now takes only 15 minutes to burn a dvd rather than nearer to an hour. Also access time is much better, making dvd's more viable for archiving.

Best,
Jason.

Many thanks to all who replied. But now I begining to wonder whether I
should buy an external dvd writer for my mac to enable me to burn DVD+R
rather then DVD-R as it seems to me that +R is the most popular format . Is
there any advantage in doing this or should I stick with DVD-R disks ?
