Thank you all very much for all this well informed input. Thanks to this List, I now know a great more about the mechanics of inkjet printing.
What I strive for is quality that is as good as old, film based, medium format but from my D1X, at print sizes up to 30 x 24, when viewed close in (which is what my clients do when they collect their portraits). I think that I am almost there. I just need crisp, clear, sharp images of all those faces on the large groups at our maximum print size. I was getting jagged edges to eye sockets but this was eliminated by going to 360 dpi ( William Curwen's resolution clash). I will do specimen prints (30 x 24 equivalent) at 180, 240, and 360 this afternoon, and let you know.
