Expensive screens etc -- is it worth it?

I'd say yes -- to meet -my- needs

Why did I spend over a thousand quid on a RIP for my printer? -- it makes a
real difference to the quality of my prints. One of the reasons for this is
that I've got a good monitor and taken the trouble to set it up as well as I
can.

There is a range of things you an do to improve your overall results, from
the free to the expensive, just how far you go along this road is driven by
the business justification and your own standards of what 'will do' (as ever
with this list, be aware that some people have a more 'exacting' approach to
life than others ;-) ;-)

As someone who does a bit of teaching, I try and emphasise there is no right
answer, but have found that just being aware of the benefits of colour
management sets many people on the path to better results (and spending
money ;-)

I never criticise those who want to use Adobe Gamma or its ilk, it's a start
(other 'free' stuff at <http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/viewing.html>).
Don't be afraid to admit that you use Adobe Gamma, if it does what you want
and you are happy with your results (which is what should be the ultimate
driver for this IMHO)

bye for now
