Steve

A brilliant article if a bit too scientific (I had to read it several times
but I now, at least, understand color theory and the need for color
management).

However, I would like to take issue with the following: To have color you
need 1) light, 2) an object and 3) an observer - for our purposes, a human
observer. Without all these components you do not have color.

This is an old worn, torn argument often used by color management gurus to
justify their huge fees and it just does not hold water. It's like saying,
when I die, existence comes to an end. Of course it does - for you! For the
rest, it carries on, erm, existing. So, colors exist, even without an
observer.

If you don't believe me, try this little experiment: walk into a garden or a
park, stand infront of a flower bed in bloom (preferably a bed of sweet peas
but almost any variety will do), close your eyes and ask a passer by
(preferably a digital photographer versed in color theory - well, maybe not
such a good idea, just find a passer by - to see if the flowers have turned
to monochrome). If they faint, you know your theory holds water. If they
say "Yeah, pull the other one" and walk on, you know your theory is leaky.
But take my word for it, it's about as sound as a MacDonald's burger is
environmentally friendly!

BTW, where can I buy your Toast Guide? I just cannot get my wife to
reproduce the toast the way I like it, and consistently. I think the Toast
Guide would be the ideal solution for solving the problem. I have looked in
depth at the ToastiChrom profiling kit but it is way out of my budget.
