I had what sounds like exactly the same problem, with a 1200 running cartridges. The printer was replaced under warranty, but I don't know if Epson actually test these things before junking them.
The most plausible explanation I managed to get (can' t remember where from) was that the electronics in the head were fried and parts of it were not bothering to drop ink whilst it traversed, but dumping everything at the end.
My 'bar codes' turned into puddles (always on RHS of paper) as I tested to find out what was going on.
