Good morning Shangara & Malcolm, the points so far raised are both valid; you need to be running with high speed off & ensure that the inks are no higher than the 1290 itself. There are 2 other conditions which can lead to similar symptoms as you have described.
Firstly, you may have a build up of excess ink on the underside of the print head, which is then flicking off at the end of the head's travel. Usually occurs on the left of the printer as you look at it, but has been known to happen on the right too. To remedy this you can either a; leave the printer 24hrs, and start again, ensuring that you have the correct settings, or b; get a small amount of slightly damp kitchen roll, place it in the part of the carriage bed on the left of the printer as you look at it which has no rollers etc on it, and very gently run the print head back & forwards over it. If you want to do this & need more detail contact me off list Second, if you look at the printer from the front with the cover up/off, you will see that there is quite a large steel bar across the back; the carriage runs along this bar on a phosphor bronze thrust bearing. It sometimes happens that this can run out of lubrication (due to paper dust, lots of use, etc) which causes banding and slightly unpredictable behaviour. If this is the case, then you can relube with a little - and I mean a LITTLE sewing machine or 3in1 oil. Take real care not to get this on any other part of the printer, and it doesn't need much, but it can magic a badly behaved, next to useless 1290 into a printing machine once again!
