This is dependent on many things, but the size of the company is going to be a 
huge part of it. Here
is one simple example: you work for a company with 1000 employees, how much 
influence is one of the
workers in the trenches going to have on the overall profitability? Depends 
right? Depends on the
profitability of the position. In the case of knowledge workers maybe more than 
someone in an
administrative role. The smaller the company the better a chance for impact on 
the profitability,
even for someone in the administrative role.

It is also very dependent on the structure of the company. In a consulting firm 
the developers have
a direct impact on billables. In a IT department of a company that sells 
widgets, the developers are
a cost center in the eyes of management. So the perspective on impacting 
profitability is completely
different.
