Ghost will split the backup, but as I understand it, it's necessary to
put the pieces together to access the backup for restoring files or full
drives.

As mentioned, I'm comfortable with creating full Ghost backups to a
different drive on a regular basis, but I also cut Nero DVD's regularly,
especially of the dev environment. On top of that, I also clone the dev
environment to three other off-site machines on a regular basis. When it
comes to backups, I over-do it. 

What I like most about Ghost is being able to quickly restore files from
it's archives that I mangle in testing. I like that fact that "it's all
there" and I don't have to worry that I might have missed a particular
file when creating partial backups, as it gets them all.
