I have always been a proponent of the monthly recurring fee pricing model.
It helps both the service provider and client keep focused on what is
important in their relationship, and since I am perpetually providing a
significant competitive and financial advantage to my clients I feel it is
appropriate that I gain a little piece of their benefit - just like an
employee who does a splendid job to get the same results but for far less
money and grief.

My clients seem to like it when compared to putting a huge cash amount out
up front as it helps them preserve capital, and if they ever feel I am not
living up to what I promised in terms of a minimal result they can always
terminate the relationship with no further risk to their capital (no long
term contracts for me, I earn my keep monthly).

It gives me a real strong incentive to produce only high quality software
that does not require any significant degree of support due to bugs or
errant behavior. Almost all of my calls from clients have absolutely
nothing to do with my application software, rather they are more of a
consulting nature.
