It has nothing to do with "politically correct". It has to do with
"legally correct".
If you interview someone for a software job and as part of the
interview ask them for their opinions on stuff like the Iraq war, you
have opened up a legal hornet's nest, and exposed your company to
lawsuits. Part of my job at Rackspace is interviewing potential hires,
and before I could do that, I had to go through several hours of legal
training on this, because if I did something stupid like ask a
candidate about politics, I would be exposing the company to a huge
liability.
Be smart about it. Find job-related questions and stick to those. You
can certainly get a feel for the sort of personality a candidate has
without resorting to breaking anti-discrimination laws. It ain't that
difficult to do.
