I was getting my hair cut and the girl who cuts my hair was telling me about 
her boyfriend getting drunk, getting into a fight, and getting arrested (for 
like the 5th time).  She was telling me this like like it was no big deal.

I can't even relate to that society.  My parents never got arrested, by family 
members never got arrested, my family never got drunk and never got into fights.

So you're right, a lot about being poor is being taught to be poor, being 
taught to accept poor jobs, have low expectations. being taught to think that 
doing well in school is for geeks.
