Well it happened once here with a qantas jet on approach. Once is more than
enough plus there have been multiple other attempts. The 12month jail
sentence sent a message to the massed loons.

Say the chances of blinding a pilot is 0.1%.
At a few thousand feet, I think the odds of a 1/8 inch beam of light 
striking a 1/2 inch pupil are much lower than that.

I agree that A) it's a stupid practice that should be illegal, simply to 
discourage idiots from shining lasers into the sky. (Did I mention that 
you can see little dots on the clouds if you shine your pointer into the 
air?)
B) trying to blind anyone with a laser should be a criminal act.

Having said that, I still can't believe it happens that often, but I'm 
very willing to admit I'm wrong.
