It is a war and it won't be won in one battle. It will take time and continued tinkering and work to ensure it remains just, universal and affordable. But it takes that first step that you seem unwilling to take. Yes, universal health care looks after those who contribute nothing but sickness. Yes, it is expensive in terms of taxpayer involvement but if you had done this all 40 years ago you wouldn't be in this mess. And in 40 years time others will be having this same argument because Americans so value freedom and democracy and choice and independence that they will happily choose disaster rather than a workable and affordable system. The rest of the world looks on and smirks at how such a rich and powerful nation can be so astonishingly inept at creating a universal health care system that the rest of us take for granted.
Obama's proposal had its flaws but it WAS that first step that you needed to take. There will be mistakes aplenty - just like any military campaign. There will be wins and defeats along the way, but unless you engage the enemy you will DEFINITELY lose. And remember the republicans aren't offering a better alternative. They are only offering the status quo. It takes courage to take on the entrenched interests that dominate and control your health industry. Obama provided the courage, but the republicans denied him the ammo. And now you all suffer another 30 years of substandard and uber-expensive care. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Pete Theisen Sent: Saturday, 6 February 2010 12:37 PM To: ProFox Email List Subject: Re: [OT] No, he can't Geoff wrote: > We 'solved' it by keeping our eyes open nearly 40 years ago and doing > something about national medical care. Do you not have lawyers, special interests and lobbyists in Australia? How do you get things passed - admittedly 40 years ago - over their objections? Now, I am not rejoicing that we have lousy health care. However, I believe this latest "cure" would have killed the patient. "Flawed" is an understatement, I'm afraid. >> Well at least you guys now get to keep you unenviable record as having the >> worst health system in the civilized world.
