Sorry, you're right. I have been trying to move them by selecting the part and then trying to move the desginator when it appears. When I selected the appropriate silkscreen layer, they moved fine.
Normally, moving designators is simply a matter of picking them up, simple as pie, much simpler than what was being tried. If you move a designator where autoposition was enabled in the component dialog, autopositioning is turned off for that designator.
