The only way to do anything constructive is to slow down, get a large gap ahead and ensure that if you have to stop you have enough room to do it slowly and carefully. i.e. put the stopping distance the fool behind is not giving you in front of you.
I would like to ask a question as well. Why do HGV drivers (and similar) always drive very close to any vehicle in front? They are trained to a higher licence than most of us but almost to a man (or woman) ignore stopping distances. I don't buy the idea they 'have to preserve the inertia of a large vehicle'. How much of us would be left after being hit by one of these at close range? It's just about criminal.
