I have more than enough space in front normally to coast down to a stop
without touching the breaks even if the car in front stopped dead - everyone
seems to speed along that road (apart from me) so after 2-3 minutes you'll
find a good 1/4-1/2 mile gap.

I think I can only slow and slow and slow until they overtake.

I'd love a LED sign that said - " Your lights are dazzling me, please back
off and I'll go a bit faster"

Three reasons, firstly they have a really good view of the road so can see
problems coming up sooner than a regular road user, they get used to that
comfort zone and don't think anyone will do anything stupid. Secondly
accelerating with a large load and or up hill takes loads of diesel and time
and is a pain. Thirdly tailgating another lorry cuts the fuel consumption a
lot.

Agreed (that is just about criminal)! I'm trying to persuade my friend who
is a traffic policeman that he should be out catching tailgaters :-)
