One more suggestion in terms of alarm reliability - make sure the sound
you choose for your alarm is a local file on your server.  I originally
used something from the "Sounds and Effects" menu, and my alarm was
reliable ~80%.  I turns out these sounds are actually hosted on
MySqueezebox.com (I believe...).  I found a sound I liked as MP3, added
to my "music" files on my server, and use that for my alarm.  Since then
my alarm has been about 99% reliable (think I got a backup sound 1x). 
Also, my Radio is connected wireless (though most of my other players
are wired).  So, using a local SBS server running 24/7, and using local
sound file on the server for me has proven to work well.
