*I happen to know<G> Haveing been thar- in 1962.. and being a Scouter and Viet-Vet I have a unique perspective<G> ..and as I get older, I see why my son thinks I'm full of beans<G> BSA- ---- First- *Boy Scouts came from the writeings of a British Army Officer who discovered that boys had used his field manual to play an grand outdoor game, and developed a *program to invite other boys. Uniform was ment to cover the social-economic differences, and create a even playing field, for the boys.. Milsup was availible and sturdy enough for boys to play hard! *Nuf-said.. more hot air availible on request<G> US Mil-Vet ---------- I was taught how to march in BootCamp<G> and thought.. When I get back, my Ranger outpost is going to get the blessing out of my US Gov training! Royal Rangers in 1962 was only 17 years following the end of WW2, and the experiance was powerful and universal in scope. WW2 era Kahki was identical to the "Dicki" style work wear and Trailblazer rank seemed like military Chevrons.. "Commander" actualy went out to the surplus store and bought USArmy "Captian" rank ensignia.. When National Commander came.. we all were impressed with his "Gold Star" rank and even refered to him as "General Johnnie Barnes" *Early in Royal Ranger history- The "feel" was outright "paraMilitary" and few had an understanding about why not to bark like Drill sargents and order "push-up's forever". During this time, of pre-VietNam involvement.. RRangers began to develop the Drill flag team and chrome helmet version of what you see with the VFW<G> (*Veterens of foriegn wars) White gloves and white pistol belts.. Rifle drill ect. *THEN 1964-65 Johnnie came back- "er.. knock off the white belt stuff" Because when > the > Royal Ranger uniform was designed it had some inspiration from the Boy > Scout > uniform and some inspiration from military uniforms as well. Excellent observation<G> Cdr.Johnnie saw that the para-military direction was not in line with his dream of a "Western Adventure" and along the way he came to understand the reasons that boy scouts echo a softer "Forest Ranger attitude" and outdoor adventure program. The first programs were Pioneers and Trailblazer/Air and Sea ranger then a shift to a western theam for Buckaroo's, followed by FCF to head off the rush into becomeing wanna-be Green Berets!<G> (*In the old days those funny "tent" hats were the pits!.. Scouts then had those snappy RED BERETS!) *more on request- Doc For > example > the current merit pins, Class B ribbons, the medals, the name tag, the > commander bars, etc. have a military influence, while the patches, > Buckaroo > Neckerchief, Straight Arrows vest, are inspired by the Boy Scouts. In > fact > in my opinion if you took away the patches from the Khaki uniforms they > would look like a military uniform.
