Having been to ANTC myself one week ago, I shall consider myself quite
fortunate to have the opportunity to retort:
As Alan Gell and Ken Harris (both from here in North Texas District, I'm
proud to say) stated during the dutch oven cooking class, the purpose is to
get to know the boys better while they get to know themselves better.
"How", the astute listener may inquire?
Us, by taking advantage of a rare opportunity to talk to the boys in an
environment that fosters a willingness to be open. (How often in an average
outpost setting, do you get a chance to REALLY talk to your boys? To find
out what's REALLY going on in thier life? And how often do you get REAL
answers?)
The boys, by finding out that they can do something that they never
dreamed was even possible, like frying bacon and eggs in a paper sack over
an open campfire. This in turn stimulates creativity and inspires the boys
to dare to dream, believe, and act accordingly. It is at times like this
when boys are most apt to share about what's really going on with them, and
we learn that we didn't know quite as much as we thought we did about what
it was like to be a boy.
Thus, the true agenda behind Advanced Cooking class is revealed!
BTW, we were encouraged to maintain the Patrol Method throughout the
entirity.:) Hope this satisfies the aching curiosity.
Yours truly, Clint Grant(no one of any particular consequence).
