Thanks Frank, I don't seem to have that particular posting. I did check to see if there were any duplicate RBENGIN*.* files, and they seemed to be OK, but I'm not certain that I really know what OK means in this context. If you have that posting, would you please forward it to me and I'll check it out.

Razzak sent about two weeks ago an email to this list server on "how to remove all Rbase program files and do a clean installation". That may hold the key to fixing your problem. Being neither a programmer nor a software developer, I do baffle easily, and I am really baffled by the results of my attempts to upgrade to build 80.30421. All past updates have gone swimmingly. I'm on an HP Pavilion 7850 running Windows ME. The first time I tried, it seemed to download OK, but my system crashed during the installation (everything died), so I terminated and rebooted. After completing the download again, I found that I could only get R:Base started after an inordinately long period (maybe 3 or more minutes). Once it loaded, it seemed to run all right, but starting continued to be inconsistent. It would usually start, but only after 3-5 minutes of grinding. During the starting period, the cursor would either disappear or freeze, so waiting seemed to be the only option. I downloaded the update again - it showed that it finished with no problems, but I still couldn't get it to start in any sensible way. If anyone out there has any suggestions for me, I would appreciate hearing them. I can't be certain that this is really a problem caused by R:Base, but all of my other programs seem to run as well and as fast as they ever did.
