Mike,

I got an electrical engineering degree at UT.

I had engineering jobs before I graduated, but never, ever since graduating
have I had an "engineering" job that used anything that I learned during my
UT course of study.

I did take a couple of classes on entrepreneurship when I was at UT. Those
classes were invaluable... but out of a whole degree program, only two of
the classes I took ever counted for something.

So the value of the classes (24 classes for a full degree program) was
limited compared to invested effort... but the value of going through the
degree program and going to school, and getting involved with what I loved
doing.... now that was priceless.

In fact, the real "break" that I had that opened a whole new world was
getting to work for a company called NeXT- that was by Steve Jobs. Getting
this chance is what shaped me professionally more than anything else. The
degree program I was in just happened to put me in the right place at the
right time to get a job as a campus rep for NeXT. The rest, as they say, is
history. (BTW, there were other jobs that I could have made substantially
more money at doing... but this one I got to follow my passions) Finding
the "break" into your passions... this is the important part to study as you
consider what you go off and do.

That being said, Steve Jobs had something to say about this whole process at
Stanford University's Commencement in 2005. See this video:

Here's a video from one of the venture capitalist behind Kleiner Perkins-
talking about how to follow your passions:

So yes, go to school. Follow your passions. Don't expect that the answers
will happen in the classroom though.

Oh... one more thing... Watch the trailer for Johnny Bunko by Daniel Pink on

Take care, and best of luck in your endeavors.
