I have a BA and MA in English. I never dreamed I'd wind up in the Web industry!
I think it's admirable that you want to dig deeply and really learn about your
craft. I transitioned careers through a combination of self-study (books and
online resources), classes at ACC (Visual Communications Dept.), and on-the-job
experience. I was a desktop publisher for several years after graduating, and
eventually I started developing XML for single-sourcing documentation.
Development was a lot more fun than formatting documents or building FrameMaker
templates, so that's when I decided to get serious about re-training. I really
value a liberal arts education and feel that the technical skills for web
design/development should not replace traditional schooling. I know that isn't
exactly what you were asking, though.

Why not take a single class and evaluate your investment after that? I highly
recommend ACC's VisCom department as well. The other feedback you received from
the Refresh Austin group is also great advice.

Best wishes,
Amy

Subject: [Refresh Austin: 3705] questions about being in the web design industry

Hello,

I'm new to the web design world and I figure this a good way to get
started. My name is mike and I"m new to web design world.

I'm starting school to get a 2nd bachelor's in web design from the art
institute (1st bba is in marketing) and I was wondering since ya'll
are in the industry, am I going in the right direction?

I see that everyone has a different background, and i'm curious what
did everyone study or how did they get to where they are today.

I hate to pay for something and then go nowhere afterwards.

Mike
