The network will be the bottleneck in either case.

I think Ecrix meant that the network backup speed over 100base-T would be in
the range of 100-150 megabytes per minute (this has been borne out in
internal tests on our network)...still way slower than the throughput from
the controller card to the drive, in either case.

The best network throughput you could hope for in a 100base-T switched
environment rarely exceeds 30mbps, which translates to 4 or 5 megabytes/sec.
