I have ripped my whole cd-collection using a laptop-pc with an Plextor
drive attached (avoiding using the internal drive as choice of drive is
important!) to a USB->IDE device, EAC and compressing to FLAC. I used
mp3tag with all its possibilities of scripting and batch-conversion to
extensively tag the files, such as "Compilation", Disc-number of number
of discs, year of recording and all sorts of tidbits you might wanna
use, incl album-art. Only problem is interaction with an ipod since it
wont play flacs (among other lossless compressed formats). Then a week
ago I stumbled over Max and as I use macs (non-intel) it saved my day.
It batch-coverted ALL my flacs to a duplicate archive of Apple Lossless
incl. tags (albumart and everything). It's nice looking at your
collection thru iTunes "cover flow" :-)
Of course it requires a lot of diskspace to have both ALACs and FLACs
but it's convenient and a backup is always nice anyway.
