Back when I was making these decisions, I followed Nonreality's (and
others') advice and I'm very happy that I did. My husbands' CDs had all
been ripped in a lossy format (like .mp3), and the sound was not good
enough when we started listening to them through our stereo system. So,
now he's re-ripping everything into FLAC. The improvement in sound is
significant.

Also following Nonreality's advice, I switched my husband from iTunes
to MediaMonkey, and he is very happy. He syncs his ipod through
MediaMonkey.

You can see my earlier posts about what I bought, etc., but I am happy
with the products that seem to be most recommended on this board:
dbPoweramp for ripping and MediaMonkey for organizing/fixing tags and
i-pod syncing. Note that mediamonkey will transcode FLAC to mp3 on the
fly as you sync your i-pod, so you don't have to worry that FLAC files
are too big for i-pod use.(I haven't bothered with mp3tag, another
tagging program.) You can do a search in the forums about each of those
programs and see all the glowing reports.
