There's definitely something nice about a bootloader like
grub which can actually understand a filesystem, partition
tables, etc at runtime... While it's a pretty clear improvement
over lilo... there's still lots left to improve.. :-)

x86-style booting is still a major drawback though.. Until
we get rid of all those crapy BIOS issues, it's all going to
be just varying shades of horrible.. :-)

linuxBIOS project.. woot woot! (for those running the subset
of hardware it supports)...

Did vmware ever come out with their little shim product?
It was supposed to be a standalone piece that booted
directly... and then 'hosted' whatever OSes you had
configured... They gave a presentation about it to
SVLUG a few years ago... then they 'raffled' off a
couple 'free' licenses for vmware... talk about a
presentation which missed the concept of the venue.. :)

Now if they'd been passing out source code tarballs...

Another annoying thing about that presentation was that
every other answer to any really technical performance
related question was "that relates to proprietary
information which we cannot discuss....".

This is why I think, over the long term, vmware will be
consigned to irrelevance... somebody will figure it out...
and then they'll be hosed....
