Yes, my proposal was to independise the outgoing MIDI channel from the 
Instrument and move it away, perhaps to the track level. But you are right, 
these are two unrelated problems, and you still need to use different tracks 
for differents guitar strings.

To clarify the MIDI channel / Track / Instrument problem in Rosegarden:
We store a MIDI channel property for each recorded MIDI channel event. But 
this property is not used for playback. Other software sequencers, like 
Sonar/Cakewalk, allow the user to assign to each track an optional forced 
MIDI channel for playback. If the forced MIDI channel is not set, then the 
original recorded MIDI channel is also used for playback. We don't have this 
option in Rosegarden: there is always a forced MIDI output channel for each  
Instrument. It should be not very hard to implement the other policy in 
Rosegarden, though. We would need a "default MIDI channel" for events created 
programmatically.
